How I Became an Overcomer of My Past

How I Became an Overcomer of My Past

Over the years, people have asked me how I’ve overcome the pain and patterns of my past. The journey began the moment I stepped into a Christ-centered 12-Step community called Celebrate Recovery.

  1. I had to admit I couldn’t do life well on my own. I needed God—and a God-honoring community of people who understood me because they, too, had experienced hurts, habits, and hang-ups like mine.

  2. Healing isn’t a one-and-done experience. It’s not a drive-thru miracle. It’s a journey—one of progress, not perfection—where God lovingly gathers the shattered pieces of our stories and begins to restore what’s been broken.

  3. I had to confront old decisions that weren’t right for me. At some point, I had followed paths and made choices that didn’t reflect who I truly was or what God desired for me. As I became untangled from those unhealthy patterns, I began to make new, life-giving decisions.

  4. I realized I had stopped believing in God’s best for my life. I had listened too long to the wrong voices—people who told me what they thought was best. God gently taught me to trust Him again and helped me confront the distorted beliefs I had about Him—and myself. His truth silenced the lies of my past.

  5. Victory began when I started knowing God personally. I reclaimed my life by getting into His Word and letting it speak to me and over me. His promises became my anchor.

  6. I couldn’t do this alone. I had to lay down the pride that said, “I’ve got this.” I don’t. I’m not Superwoman. But I’ve learned that I don’t have to be. Thank you, Celebrate Recovery, for being the community that reminded me I am never alone.

  7. God used many tools along the way. His Word, the 12 Steps, and resources like Changes That Heal, Boundaries, Hiding from Love, Life’s Healing Choices, Shelter from the Storm, and Reclaiming Hope have helped shape my recovery journey.

We were never meant to walk this road alone. Healing happens in community, with Christ at the center.
